How to compare used EV battery health reports
A battery-health label can look simple: a status, a capacity figure or a state-of-health estimate. Before comparing two vehicles, ask which test produced the result, what it measures and when it was recorded.
A percentage by itself is difficult to interpret. Different tests can report different kinds of results and use different measuring tolerances. Treat the report behind the headline number as the useful evidence, and keep it tied to the individual vehicle it describes.
Ask for the test record behind the number
If a supplier can provide a battery report, ask for the original result page or file. Check whether it identifies:
- The vehicle or stock reference, odometer reading and date of the test.
- The test name and tool, and whether the result is an estimate, a remaining-capacity figure or a status such as pass or fail.
- Any battery-management fault codes shown during the test, and whether the record describes follow-up work.
- Limits or qualifications in the result, including whether it calls for further testing or cannot give a qualified measurement.
A dashboard range display is useful context, but it answers a different question from a documented battery-capacity test. If a report does not state its method or date, ask for that context before comparing it with another result. Do not assume that a document exists when it has not been provided.
One Volkswagen bulletin shows why the method matters
A Volkswagen technical service bulletin hosted by NHTSA describes three high-voltage battery test plans with different outputs and measuring tolerances. The bulletin lists only Volkswagen e-Golf model years 2015–2019 and ID.4 model years 2021–2024 as applicable vehicles. It is a model-specific example of why two battery percentages may not be directly comparable; it does not set a universal procedure for other makes, models or model years.
Keep battery condition and safety separate
NHTSA describes the traction battery as a high-voltage system and says EV service should be handled by a qualified technician with specialized high-voltage training and suitable equipment. Do not ask an untrained person to open or probe a battery pack to produce a report. If a result is unclear, ask a qualified service provider what the test can and cannot establish.
NHTSA’s Battery Safety Initiative lists battery diagnostics and test-procedure development among its research activities. That describes a research program, not an assessment of an individual vehicle.
Read the result as dated evidence
Temperature can affect battery performance and lifespan, so treat a test as a dated snapshot rather than a forecast of future range. Ask separately for any maintenance or diagnostic records that matter to your decision. Those records are covered in more detail in our guide to reading a battery diagnostic record, which sets out what a scan can and cannot establish. Do not infer that they exist when none have been supplied.
For other fields that help make two listings comparable, see our guide to reading a Chinese dealer listing. Once you know what the documents say, the next question is what they are worth in the paperwork: putting the battery in writing before a quotation sets out where that wording has to appear. If you are comparing a particular vehicle or batch, send the vehicle details in a sourcing request and identify which battery documents you want the supplier to ask about. Any report depends on what the supplying dealer can provide.

Where to go next
- Read the listing fields that help compare vehicles — including registration date, odometer and drive layout.
- Send a sourcing request with the vehicle and destination — you can name the battery documents you want the supplier to ask about.

Ask about battery documents for a vehicle
Send the vehicle reference or model and the destination country, and say which report or test details matter to you. A colleague can ask the supplying dealer what may be available; availability depends on the vehicle and supplier.
We use what you send only to answer your inquiry, never for marketing. How we handle your details.
